Steffan has taken a very non-traditional route in becoming Cornerstone’s Associate Pastor. After earning his B.S. in Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1986, he moved to South Florida, and began working as a high school math teacher and football coach. It was during this time that he met, and immediately fell in love with, his wife-to-be, Sandy. They married in 1990.
In 1996 Steffan left teaching and began serving as a Special Agent with the FBI. Originally stationed in Miami, he later was transferred to the Springfield Division. Although his work took him across the country, and around the globe, his most memorable moment in the FBI was when he was introduced to, and immediately fell in love with, the person of Jesus Christ.
Steffan retired from the FBI in 2016 and joined the staff at Cornerstone immediately thereafter.
Steffan and Sandy have five children – three domestic and two imported. Caitlyn (born 1993) currently attends Iowa State with her husband, Nate Coonts, and is studying dietetics. Nate is studying history after completing a four-year stint in the U.S. Navy. Abby (born 1996) studied for two years at Iowa State, but has taken a year off to work as a missionary in Central America, Africa and Southeast Asia. Connor (born 1998) will enter the Marine Corps following his high school graduation. Kizza David (born 2001) and Kaggwa Francis (born 2003) were adopted in 2013 from Uganda.
Steffan is currently enrolled at the Wesleyan Seminary at Indiana Wesleyan University. He desires to follow hard after Christ with reckless obedience.
